I was home for the holidays and asked my brother in law if i could see the bottle stoppers I made 1 year earlier. These were the first bottle stoppers I ever made. I used blo and Ca but heating it with the paper towel and Ca like in this video. (WoodTurning BLO and CA Pen Finish: http://youtu.be/orcgOf4siqc)
I no longer finish items this way but want to understand what happened. They also have put the stoppers in and out of the fridge and lot. I plan to make more bottle stoppers but dont want this to be happening.

Teak and Strabalized Buckeye burl. Both originally had a very high gloss finish on them last Christmas.

Temperature issue? Humidity? Blo? Why?

Thoughts comments please

The temperature changes can certainly cause CA to crack being taken in and out of the fridge (especially in the summer...

From the photos tho, it looks to me like they've rolled around the silverware drawer (circular scratching around the high points), and likely been dropped or hit by something (the "spots") which basically causes a small crack and separation between CA/Wood, and a little air gets under there..

For me, bottlestoppers are not subjected to the same type of daily handling that pens are, so I would avoid CA finishes on them and go with a more natural wood finish (poly, lacquer, etc), and make your brother in law a nice stand to store them in rather than the silverware drawer...

I was actually about to comment the exact same thing. They look like they have been rolled around in a drawer.

I would suggest something like Capn Eddie's shine juice. 1 part shellac, 1 part denatured alcohol and 1 part boiled linseed oil. Apply with a paper towel and use a friction technique to set it. One or two coats is all you need. Look up the video on youtube, OB's shine juice.

My preferred finishes for bottle stoppers are WOP, a shop-made 'long oil' varnish (equal parts spar varnish, tung oil and turpentine), and pure tung oil.

I would stay away from a shellac-based finish - shellac dissolves in alcohol. And in my opinion, CA is overkill for stoppers.

I have had some pens that were finished with CA do this and as best I can figure its is moisture under the CA coat.
I have noticed when band sawing wood blanks that as the blade gets near the end of the cut and just before it breaks thru you can see moisture dampen the wood right at the blade for just a second.
I avoid using a CA finish on any wood that does this.
