A lidded box and finial I made for the Atlantic Shore Woodturners monthly challenge. The wood is Maple and African Blackwood with a friction polish finish. Under the finial is a small piece of Abalone shell. The box stands about 5"tall and 1 3/4" dia.

Love it! I've seen a few of these little boxes, always loved them. I think the Abalone shell is a nice touch.

Curious, is the lid a friction pop-fit, or can it be lifted with just two fingers?

Very Cool - someday I will have to venture into something a little bigger than pens, but I find hollowing out a turning very intimidating. - Dave
You could do that with a 1.5" to 2" spindle. Not much larger than a pen, and since its still spindle work, its not much different either, other than the more pronounced curvy shapes.
