Here is the final pen, as per previous post, from a barn board of my Great Nephew's grandpa's barn. This one is obviously Red Oak and was hard as a rock with deep weathering that carried into fissures I'm the wood. That is the dark staining you see, though in this case I was not trying to keep it, is simply remained.
This piece had both ends cut at an angle so I set the mitre gauge to 30 degrees, cleaned up the edge and cut the blank on the second pass. It was an effort to take advantage of the stunning "rays" coming from the wood. I was pleased with the way it turned out. The kit is a ProX Art Deco purchased from Exotic Blanks.
Not yet sure why images are flipping upside down when I attach.
