Picked up a board of inexpensive poplar and cut a piece from the end of it and made this.
It reminded me how much extra sanding is required when using softer wood like that and sanding end grain along with face grain.
The rest of the board will be used for segmented boards so it will all be face grain sanding .

This poplar has a lot of marking in it.

I usually look for poplar with some natural green coloring but they didn't have any left. However , I was pleased with the rather unique markings that board had in it .

Hmmm ... yes, it does have some wierd markings ... perhaps it started spalting? Or had some mold or fungus that just started growing in the tree?

It still looks pretty! :)
