First photo was taken with light positioned in front of my photo box

Second photo was taken with light positioned overhead and diffused by a very thin white cloth

Very nice pen, great wood and execution. It looks like you used the same shutter speed and aperture for both shots. When you diffuse the light, you need to increase the exposure, preferably a slower shutter speed so you don't lose depth-of-field.
