Having read the recent IAP threads on dying woods and on creating centerbands, having just done a pen for a Canadian Peacekeeper, and wanting to do another pen for a US Service Man or Woman, I decided to try a different idea to complement a slimline US Flag clip I had.

The result is the curly maple pen with a Corian centerband you see below. I used resin dyes I got at a hobby shop to dye the wood on the lathe prior to the 320 grit sanding (finished at 1500 and burnished). Bush Oil, CA, several layers of homemade FP, and TSW.

Not quite the depth of color I envisioned, but....

Thanks to all who have shared their ideas over the past months.

BTW, I originally got the resin dyes to mix with CA to add some colored fill. Seems to work. CA mixture stays fluid for a while and allows a bit of working time.

Welcome, Jack, and thanks for posting the picture. The pen looks extremely nice. You couldn't pick a better choice for the recipient (whoever he or she may be). Your generosity, and that of the other supporters of Canadian Peacekeepers and the Freedom Pen Program, is inspiring.
