I had an interesting conversation yesterday through PM's with a member here. We discussed my ignorant attitude, and we talked about people that used to be here, and people that are here, and some other stuff too...

In the process of our conversation, there were a couple of penmakers that came up that i had never really paid any attention to. They rarely post to the boards, and when they do, it is 99% of the time pure Business.

I decided to do some homework on my own accord. I wanted to see if this person was correct to put their abilities so high on the pecking order. I searched their accounts, and found websites for each of them. I clicked on the first link and after just a few minutes, I had to go get a drool towel. I opened the second website and it was even worse. It was pen porn at it's best!

These two penmakers are doing things i have only heard about in the back corners of IAP. You know the area with no lights that all of us weirdo's like to hang out at. I heard whispers once or twice, and thought these designs were Unicorns (mythical creatures that dont actually exist). Or at the very least, coocoo birds. They may have existed at one time, but they have long been forgotten....

Well they do exist! I saw them! I saw designs i didn't know existed! I just looked at Sierra style pens for sale for well over $100 each. More importantly, I WANTED TO BUY THEM! Stunning design ideas that, if i had to guess, took weeks to develop. Thing were done that i did not know COULD BE DONE!

I guess the whole point of this thread is to say to slow down and "smell the roses", Or "Look at the pens" as it were. We are fortunate enough to have some of the best and most innovative penmakers in the UNIVERSE right here to tap into for knowledge, and leadership, but instead we fight like 12 year olds. If i spent half as much time looking at peoples work, and working myself as i do bitching, then i would already be well on my way to achieving some of these designs and probably developing a few of my own along the way!

I, personally, Have been rejuvenated! Seeing these works of art has reinspired me and my penmaking.

Sorry to rave on like this... It was quite a suprise, as I thought i already knew who all the "Superstars" were. Boy was i wrong!

I have been fortunate to have the occasional person PM me to act like my mother too, on occasion!

Beyond that, and the bickering that sometimes happens...you are absolutely right about the abundance of talent on the board that we need to spend more time paying homage to instead of playing school yard games with peoples minds.

Well said Ron. There is greatness here, and from my short time here, it's very apparent to me that there is a great willingness of others to share their views and techniques for pen turning. It is a wonderful community that is growing here.

Long live the pen!

I always claim that I don't care what people think, and it is all about supporting the craft. I have used that as an excuse to be kinda mean to some people. Now i am by no means saying that i am going to cave in on topics i feel strongly about, It just means i am going to TRY to think a little more before i post. Seeing these artists has opened my eyes and made me realize that everyone on this site has that potential if they aren't already there.

I want to be viewed as an all around assett(sp) to the site. I am going to spend less time in casual convo, and more time in SOYP. I want to help the other positive role models lead the new cats instead of getting into PM battles with them. I want to have conversations with my friends about how much fun it is at IAP again! I will take a Behind the scenes practical joke over Behind the scenes drama ANYDAY.

I am going to focus on penmaking with a new determination. Like the first day i got my lathe. I know i have the ability to learn to be great, It just takes focus, desire, and drive.

But let's move past the penmaking. We all WANT TO BE HERE. If we didn't want to be here, there wouldn't be at least 60 people online at any given moment, and we wouldn't be having 12 page debates on quality, or be pissed about the "bandwagon jumpers" from the Wussies thread. We would just leave and never return.

Let's all make a consious (sp again... dumb okie, i know) effort to bury the hatchet, drop the knife, blah blah.

We got people mad at people, trying to create drama for each other, calling names, making under breath jabs. People have quit posting, or just left the site alltogether, People want to drive half way across the country to have a "face to face" with each other (and not in a positive way). This person is mad at this person. These people aren't talking to this person. This guy is PMing hateful messages... What's next, We gonna start taking jabs at each other in our signatures? Maybe some good ole cussing matches?

So... This is my invitation to everyone and anyone. If you are in some doo-doo with someone.... Do us all a favor, and FLUSH IT! Do it thru PM's. Apologize publicly, this thread is a good a place as any!

Talk is cheap right??? Here i will go first!

Jeff,
I owe you an apology because i know for a fact that you have had to waste more time than needed reading PM's and emails about my ignorant behavior.

Curtis,
I am sorry for all the posts that have been reported and needed action. I am also sorry for the way i handled the whole "cactus" situation. You are a good Mod, and a decent guy. You deserve more respect that i showed you.

Phillip,
I am sorry for trying to discredit you on the boards. You are obviously here for the same resons as me, and i respect that. I look forward to contributing to your wood characteristics list!

I also have some personal apologies i will be sending out through PM. If you feel that I owe you an apology, and i don't send you one, SPEAK UP!!! I may not change my point of view, but i will take credit for my wrong-doings.

Now, who's next??

Ron, you are a good man and I wouldn't worry it to deeply. I've had my ins and outs with this forum, but than I think, it's about pen turning, how could that be upsetting? I now am picking carefully on the CC threads, but I do read some because there is some very interesting stuff there. I find the "block" option very useful also. IF I see something that negatively excites me, I'm moving on, it is not worth it. No one knows me personally and I don't know them personally so why bother.

Ron, I'm glad to hear that you've had a change of heart, those turners you referenced will help you if you ask them, they wont tell you how to or give you a video step by step, but both are wonderful people, and if you show a little bit of trying, the most likely will help you over the humps in the road.

Ron, it takes a strong man to admit the things you have copped to here. I, for one consider you to be one of the most helpful people on this site and I have absolutely no problem with you at all. If not for your tutorials and answers to my questions I probably would never have gotten into casting. I am pleased to be a member of the same site as you.

Don't spend a whole lot of time beating yourself up over some silly arguments. And just because someone gets offended, doesn't mean that you were wrong.
