I got my wood!!!

My mother order some karri burl for me as a gift and it's finally here. She ordered it from West Penn Hardwoods and it weighs about 9 lbs. I was thinking about makeing a lot of pens from it but there is one problem, I cannot figure out which way the grain goes. The top and bottom are really rought so I cannot see the grain and the side and end grain look so much alike that I cannot tell them apart. Does anyone have any suggestions?

P.S. From what I can see from the sides, IT IS BEAUTIFUL!!!
