Thanks for the nice comments. Yes, Chris, I have friends in both mainland China and in Taiwan. I'm fortunate to get woods from friends on 6 continents.

Thanks to each of you who have posted. This is indeed, a lacquer finish. I wish I could say that I have a secret. Heck, I'd write a book! Instead, I've read Russ's website about a hundred times, Michael Dresdner's probably 10 times, refinished pens at least fifty times and I'm finally getting pretty good at it. Smoothness is in the consistency of repetition... and the micro-mesh plus TSW.
