Help me out to ID this wood

So this is a Blk Ti Jr gent 2 made from whatchamacallit burl.:biggrin: Turned out pretty sweet. It was coated in a polyurethane before I drill and turned it. It didnt smell like amboyna. It seemed to hard to be redwood burl. Which I have only turned once, and it was like cutting a piece of butter (not in the good way). Finish is CA 5 thin, 5 med. sanded thru 12k and polish with some new car polishes my dad got to use with his enduro finish. It works pretty good.

Might it be Red Gum burl? Second choice: Red Mallee Burl?

If it was really hard, I'm going to go with red mallee as well. That stuff's like turning rock!

Let me add Pommelle Sapele to the hat because of the color and quilting running in the grain. However, I just turned a Mallee Burl last week that looks very close ecept for the quilting effect. JimS

Red mallee would make sense, because the guy I got it from had alot of aussie burls.

I have had some redwood burls that"cut like butter" although they were stabilized which makes them fairly hard. They look very much like that. Otherwise...wastree. Was tree, now pen!

My thought was Amboyna Burl as well but I have never turned Mallee Burl.
