So ... I started woodworking some of years ago .. got the idea to make a cradle for my first grandkid .. Anyway, one day I stopped at a Woodcraft or Rockler to pick up something .. my wife was with me. She roams the store and while I'm checking out she shows me a turning of some sort they had on display .. a bowl or something made out of one of those bankisa nut pod things .... she says "why don't you do this?" ... I told her I did woodworking ... did not have a lathe and didn't know but thought it was sort of expensive to get into. That Christmas .. a big box under the tree .. a lathe! One of those very basic midi's made by M power I think .. but ... thats how it started.

Started doing pens and did a bunch but not regular .. just once in awhile. This year wife decided I needed a new lathe so she ordered me a Turncrafter .... Not sure I would have picked that one but it seems pretty decent, was on sale .... Anyway.. It sort of got my juices flowing again and decided I'm going to start turning. Back when I started I bought a 100 pack of blanks .. still have a bunch of those so decided I'm gooing turn a pen a day until I feel i'm good at it. No idea what I'll do with the pens but heck .. I'll think of something.

Came across this forum in some post I saw and figured ... this might be the place for the "when in doubt, ask" advise so here I am. Look forward to seeing some great stuff.

Kevin,

What a great story! It's nice that your wife is all-in on your turning.

Welcome to the forum. Your name will be easy for me to remember.

Greetings from Nebraska and welcome to the IAP community.

Milwaukee was a really fun place to visit, but I haven't been there since 2019 when I retired. I was the Director of Engineering in charge of the Vishay Milwaukee Resistor company there in Milwaukee, but at one time we also had plants in Grafton and up through Green Bay to Oconto and over to Oconto Falls (Vishay Cera-Mite). I had a lot of fun at the Brat House and am still hooked on Spotted Cow.

Regards,
Dave
