New to wood turning. I friend of mine got a lathe for Christmas and after playing with it I got the bug. Found one at an estate sale and was able to get it, and met a local pen turner in the process. He was kind enough to spend a few hours with me going over the basics. Came home and ordered a bunch of stuff and about to get started. Any advice or tips are welcome!

Welcome from Texas, Blake.

Let us know what kind of lathe you have and I'm sure someone will be able to answer any questions you might have about it. Best advice I can give you is be safe & avoid fine dust - get a dust collector & air cleaner if you don't have them already and have fun.

Be sure to join in on the BASH contests & activities starting Monday. Let me know if you have any questions.

Pen Turning tips

Hi B,
Turn as high speed as you are comfortable with and use sharp tools. Get multiple grits of sandpaper and work from 80 to 400 to get the finish you want. Also, don't turn poison ivy wood without gloves.
