This is a gavel roughly based on what is called the "Broadus Gavel" used at the Southern Baptist Convention, named after what many Southern Baptists consider the "prince" of expository preaching, John Broadus who taught many, many moons ago at Southern Seminary.

The original Broadus gavel actually, according to the picture, has a lot of metal on it-- the striking faces and part of the handle are metal, the rest of the wood is, interestingly, BOW. I have not had the honor of seeing this gavel in person, only color photos.

This gavel is very non-gaudy--- very straightforward and a fun gavel to make. And it's my first gavel.

The wood in this gavel is from a 150+ year old red oak that was blown down years ago by a hurricane here in NC-- a tree from a church yard. I was commissioned to make a similar gavel to the Broadus gavel.

The handle has a good bit of spalting near the butt, selected on purpose. The owner was pickled tink!

Finish is simple BLO and Ren wax.
