One of the traditions of the Richmond Woodturners Club is that the current president makes the former a gavel. I could never figure out what a past president could to with a gavel, but inspired by previous gavel pens made by Don Ward I thought I would give it a try. Wanting to incorporate some of my own design so I installed magnets ibn the base and striker so it could sit as one piece on a desk.

Nice going Bruce. I've made two of those lately for the same reason...well sort of. I'm not the president of any clubs but I did make a couple for the outgoing president of a couple of local civic clubs. I was a demonstrator at the Oregon Woodturning symposium back in March and did the gavel pen demo twice. They are a fun project and are always liked by the recipient. The magnets are a good idea. I'm working on using one of the pens with magnetic caps instead of the screw on caps. I think that would be a good improvement. Love your take on this project.
Do a good turn daily!
