Brides' Cogs are traditionally used at Orcadian weddings, to introduce and integrate the guests at the reception. There is little doubt that the brides cog is successful at doing this and is a source of much interest and amusement.
The Bride's cog is filled with a warm alcoholic mixture, made up from home brew (home-made beer), rum, whisky, other spirits, sugar and spices. This is then carried round by the bride and groom, and later just passed between guests, whereby those present are invited to join in and drink the brew.
Brides cogs are handmade from wood, constructed in a similar manner to wooden barrels - i.e. made from staves of wood, held together with hoops of metal, and has two (sometimes three) handles projecting from the top.
Being an integral part of the wedding, the bride's cog becomes a valuable memento of the occassion and often is takes pride of place in the home of the bride and groom.
