That is a pen from fossil (bog) ivory. Really unique texture. Really.

Fascinating material with a beautiful finish. Is there any chance it will crack with time? I've worked mammoth ivory with mixed results -- sometimes it cracked, sometimes it didn't (ALWAYS smelled terrible, tho!)

Nice pen - but lose the tie background, way to busy to show off the pen. The eye has a hard time finding the pen. IMHO !

dgscott, thank you!
I have made dozens of mammoth ivory pens (or pens with mammoth ivory insterts).
Hairline cracks - it is usual thing for mammoth, but it is not hard to fix it (for example, with dental cement). Only once had problems with huge cracks that, and I just made new pen for that customer. So, mammoth ivory is a raffle....
And you are right, odor is disgusting... First. Now I am accustomed to this. :) It is a little sweet for me.

SDB777, do you mean pen kit or lathe?

By the way, there is a sister of that pen. From snow white ivory.

Really nice pen - as was your other. And I like the innovative tie background, even though it is a little busy. The cuff links are a great touch, too. Quick question: what is "snow white ivory"? Haven't heard of that before. Russ

Sorry for confusing you. Usually mammoth ivory have cream color. White is rare. So i just mean that pen made from white ivory.

PS:
