It was high gloss polyurethane. I don't recall the brand. Thanks for the compliments! I reall ought to use at least a self-centering chuck. And, one that fits properly on the lathe. I had to catch the bowl after I turned it off.
and if you need nuts, the squirrels and/or other rodents keep filling things in my shop with acorns and nuts... found a stash in my latex glove box on a shelf 5 feet off the floor.
I generally start with a 3 or 4 inch face plate - depending on how big the blank is - then switch to my Barracuda II from PSI... it's not a real expensive chuck and has worked well for me over the years.... I want to get a couple with the single keys to tighten, since trying to use the tommy bars gets to be a little cumbersome and at times I could use 3 hands instead of 2... but mine does work well for me.
