Can anyone recommend a good dvd for beginners that is focused on tools and tools usage? Close up pictures is a must.

Thanks
Darryl

For a great tutorial of tools and tool control you can watch Bill Grumbine's "Turned Bowls Made Easy". Yes, it is aimed at bowl turning but if you follow the general rules he teaches it will help with all your turnings.

No need to buy a DVD. There are great videos in our library.
Particularly those by Ed Davidson ( YoYoSpin )

Youtube can be pretty good too, check out videos by Glenn Lucas, he's a production bowl turner and turns around 1500 salad bowls a year. I took a bowl turning course with him last year. Top notch guy.

Yeah Bob Hamilton is really good too. I'm dying to try one of his winged bowls. That propeller sound kinda scares the heck outta me though :beat-up:

For what its worth Glenn has brought out his own DVD which covers all aspects of his turning, from selecting the wood, cutting it, tool sharpening and the turning and refinishing of his bowls. It also covers the use of spindle gouges and skews.

Turning is all about technique and that is something you can't learn from a book or video . They can teach you the basics but to learn YOUR technique you have to turn for yourself . Watch the videos and read the books but get some inexpensive wood and start turning . You will make mistakes but you will learn the feel of the tools and how to use them in a way that works for you . It is most important to use safety equipment , Face shield and Dust mask/Respirator are the two most important ones , never turn on a lathe without them .
