What is the proper grit for a diamond dressing tool to dress a 120 white grinding wheel? I thought they were all 36 grit but now I see 120 grit dressing tools. Should I use a 120 grit or 36 grit dressing tool?

Yes!!

The primary use is to level the wheel. The 36 works better for coarser grits say below 120 and the finer grit will better level finer grits say 150 and above.

Deep groves in a fine wheel bring in the more coarse.

I use a single point dresser for all the stones, but it is not handheld.

Thank you for clarifying. I'm new to all this and trying to get it right.

Diamonds are used in a lot of cutting tools and if resourceful you can get some for dressing your grinding wheels. I've used a rock drill bit that was about 1 1/4" or so in diameter and saw blades from a big concrete saw. I cut wedges from the blade with a cutoff disc in a disc grinder. Ask a road repair crew next time you see them cutting pavement for a worn out one. Still plenty of diamonds to dress the wheels with for yourself and a bunch of friends too.
