This pepper mill is turned from Douglas Fir. The grain is amazing. I had to seal it with shellac because of the resin streak. It then got 7 coats of an all natural environmentally friendly oil finish. I used the other part of the blank to turn the hummingbird feeder.

Very nicely done Michael! The resin streak in the peppermill is unique!

I think many overlook softwoods when turning and subsequently miss out on some wonderful grain and coloring in these woods.

Hi Michael - The beauty of the grain caught my eye right off the bat. Nice work.

I was wondering what you used to make the Hummingbird feeder "guts"? I'd like to make a few of those for around our cottage.

Happy Turning - Tom

Thanks guys. I couldn't believe how heavy this blank was for being a softwood.

Tom, the innards are small only holding 3 oz. but I like that because it encourages people to clean the feeder more often. At least that is what I hope. They are the Perky Pet 215p. You have so many more options to find them than I do up here in Canada. Try Walmart (they have them online at least) or go to birdfeeders.com.
