I've made a number of duck calls (wood) and used a CA finish on the barrel (inside and out). I'm getting ready to try my first deer grunt (PSI kit) with wood. Because of the O-ring, I'm a little hesitant to use a CA finish; I'm afraid the ring will stick to the barrel if the thing is subject to high temps and the CA softens. (They will be for friends and family in Kansas...gets hot in the summer time and the deer grunt will likely end up in a pick-up).

Is there a "better" finish?
Thanks for the suggestions,
john

I just did my first grunt and used Minwax Antique Oil. It is a polymerizing so it actually soaks in and hardens. You can get a satin finish off of it with 2-3 coats. If you have time you can also use 100% Pure Tung Oil. It takes days to dry in between coats sometimes though.

I don't usually finish the inside of the grunts where the o-rings goes... most of my calls are finished with a wipe on poly and if the heat does get to the call, even that will likely stick... less likely for the raw wood to stick.
