I am interested in starting to do some TBC as my mandrel is getting wobbly and really irritating me.

I have a Rockwell beaver 3400 without an MT Headstock... it is 7/8x14 only.

I do have a good oneway talon chuck with spigot jaws that should be able to grab someone well enough to do turning between centers.

I am unsure how to proceed, any advice?

You need to look for a dead centre with a straight shank or have one made by someone like Rick Herrell. My apologies if I got the name spelling wrong. Or get an aluminiun rod or brass one and mount it in your chuck and turn a 60 degree point on it yourself. It may need a touch up every few pens and getting the angle perfect isn't really needed but it will work and match your chuck.

Are you confident your chuck is precise enough to use for tbc?

If I was in your situation I'd get a beall collet chuck and have a dead center made for it

How do you hold a mandrel shaft now?
