Cypress, what do I do with it?

My father brought some Cypress back from Texas. It came from a downed snag along a river bed so it's supposedly legal. The pieces are from 2 to 3 inch branches. I've never worked with cypress and am open to ideas. Should I cut it on an angle or straight? How would you finish it. I do a lot of segmented pens so I have that. I appreciate any pointers.

Well, it is wicked soft, so the risk of dents and dings is fairly high. It looks and works a lot like pine.
