Having had some recent problems with blowouts while drilling wood blanks for some of the bigger pen kit profiles, I'm pondering whether I should cut my own blanks to make them a little bigger than the typical 5/8-inch blank. Any suggestions for who carries a wide selection of wood for doing that sort of thing? Any other thoughts or opinions?

As long as the blanks are large enough for the kit you're using, it's not the blank. Drill slower and clean out more often. Slower is better. If you're drilling to fast, the wood and drill bit heat faster and the shavings clog the exit. One word, patience.
