Made one late last night and one early this morning. My wife is about to look for a Pen Turners Anonymous group in Houston..... Just kidding.
The first is one of Curtis Seebeck' s Texas Hybrid Blanks with Elm on a Jr. Gentleman and the second is Camphor burl on a Majestic Jr. The Hybrid blank is beautiful and has a resin that shimmers as you rotate the pen. Can't really do it justice in the picture. The wood has a lot of character. Would love to know from where Curtis rescued the wood.
The Camphor Burl (Cinnamomum camphora) turns easily. It gives off a definite musky cinnamon aroma to it while drilling and turning. The wood near the eyes had pin holes that were filled with CA. The CA finish pretty much squelched the aroma. Both pens were finished to 600 grit, CA (medium) X 8 coats, MM to 12000 followed by HUT Plastic polish and a coat of Ren Wax. I hope everyone has a great day. Comments are welcomed and thank you so much for looking!
