I didn't read the link, but I was taught cursive writing back in 3rd grade, I believe.
They had a local court case thrown out recently because the witness couldn't read cursive. She was one of those students who was passed along just to get her thru the system as fast as possible.

She graduated high school, but her reading & writing was a 2nd grade level when they tested her.
This was in our nation's capital, naturally. (not a political statement)

If the kids of today are our future, we are truly & completely screwed.
