cross bow?

my son has been making prototype cross bows for years in my shop which try to shoot pencils. i have never jumped in because it's been fun seeing what he comes up with. anybody try anything out there that works well?

He hasn't done one lately, but when my son first got out of the army and had his apartment in Austin, he made full sized crossbows.... in his living room ... he didn't have a workshop so he worked in his living room... he used the regular aluminum or aluminum alloy staves for the bow... he had trigger locks and the whole nine yards... they were beautiful... now that he has a house with a garage, and a full time job, he doesn't do much anymore... he did work on a mandolin last year...

I did a serch on Google Books Popular Mechanics and Crossbow Build. and there are many plans available.
Sometimes the old school ways is the best primer to get focused.
