Hi all, I know its been a while but my 13" lathe is still down with a shattered thrust bearing and 0.030" wear on the journal. So i'm using a friends heavy 10" south bend to turn the blanks. However I still made my largest Damascus billet yet (a 40 layer, 15 lb hunk of steel) It measured 6"x1.5"x4". I forged it out to 0.750" dia. rods 24" long and made 3 of them. that equals 6' of pen blanks, and I had 4' of 9/16" left over from my last billet. so some may see just cut steel in the 2nd pic...I see 2) broadwel scepter fountain pens, 4 bolt action tec pens, 4 buffalo pencils, 8 breast cancer twist pens, 11 trim line pens, 8 slim line pens, and 1 led flash light. more up dates coming soon.

comming soon pt.2

Ok, so I spent 5 hrs at my friends shop and used his heavy 10" I turned all the blanks for the breast cancer pens to the major diameter and bored the ctr for the brass tubes. Witch brings me to this point. even though the instructions say to use a 8mm drill there is too much play in the fit. I used a micrometer and the tube measured 0.302". that's 0.013" of sloppy fit. so I used a "N" bit then reamed the bore to 5/16 which provided a tighter fit. the same went for the 3/8" bore, I ended up using an "U" bit which gave me almost a press fit. Now the blanks go in the mandrel and I will take the last 10-20 thou with my files. THX for reading my posts Hope you find some use out of them. If anything you can laugh at my methods.

I drill to the ID of the tubes and don't use the brass tubes at all. I just press the kit directly into the Damascus. You can drill slightly smaller and then bore to exactly where you need it. Tight and press or loose and glued.

I still use the brass tube in metal blanks for the added benefit of keeping the inner pen parts clean.

Vincent, I love your posts and seeing how your processes work. The final results are awesome!:)

If you are concerned with pressing the components, bore a bit larger and glue them in. Really no different than gluing in the brass and pressing components. I've done both without issue.

It saves a step but also insures the components aren't off centered. If the brass is a little off centered due to the hole size, everything else will be too. With wood we turn it from the glued in tube and this isn't a problem.
