Hello,
I was using Rust-o-leum white spray paint to paint the tubes for my acrylic pen projects. The white paint kept coming off after glue applied and tube inserted into blank. So, I tried putting the tubes in a bamboo steaming basket with about an inch of Ammonia underneath. The Ammonia fumes darkened them, but the tubes just crumbled in my fingers!!! Yesterday, I went to the local Ace Hardware, and bought a can of Krylon flat black spray paint. Painted the tubes, and put them in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. I tried to scrape away some of the paint with my fingernail, and could not do it. My problem has been solved. MY wife is not too happy about me cooking brass tubes in the house, but a cheap toaster oven from the thrift store will solve that problem.
I hope this helps.
