I finished my first ebony pen yesterday. This is about the 16th or so pen I have made and have done really well with the BLO and medium CA technique on most of the wooden pens I have made.

I had a lot of trouble with the finish as it was spotty with a few bright areas and other areas dull looking I had to sand it back down and start over. I thought maybe I was not moving my hand fast enough back and forth and that is why it was piling up in spots so I worked faster and that helped a bit but didn't make it as uniform in surface shine as I would like. The picture looks OK but close examination of the pen says otherwise.

Any suggestions?

Give the bare wood a good wipe down with DNA or acetone after sanding and right before finishing. Ebony is oily and will cause problems finishing.

It looks nice btw. I like that look.
