Boiled Linseed Oil is available at most any hardware or paint store.

It is readily available as mentioned. Boiled linseed oil is not really boiled but has additives to make it dry faster...not sure why it's called boiled. Raw linseed oil takes forever to dry..if it ever does... You should have no problem finding boiled linseed oil.

A short history lesson.....
Linseed Oil dries by polymerization, which means that the smaller molecules of the liquid link together to form the larger molecules of the solid. Naturally curing oils use atmospheris oxygen for this process. Left to itself raw Linseed oil will cure on the surface, which seals the finish under it from the oxygen that is required. The result is a mess that has a hard surface film with soft liquid under it. The air will eventually penetrate the surface and the oil under it will cure, but this will take many days to weeks in ideal conditions, and may seem like forever in cooler temperatures or higher humidity.
It is called Boiled Linseed Oil because in the old days, before modern chemistry, the raw Linseed Oil was changed by a process that included boiling the liquid oil to change its chemistry. Boiling was replaced by the addition of drying agents to supply the needed oxygen to the reaction in the 1940's. The early drying agents were Lead and Cadmium compounds, but they were replaced with mercury compounds in the 1970's when all lead and cadmium were removed from paint by Congressional action.

Boiled Linseed Oil, is Raw linseed Oil with the addition of Terebine. Terebine, can usually be bought at the same store. ( or it can in the UK) dontheturner

To join the thread; BLO generates heat as it cures. This is how spontaneous combustion starts fires. Dispose of anything soaked in BLO properly.
