We have purchased some turning stock over the pash six months that is encased in wax. Mostly amboyna, ebony, rosewood, cocobolo and olivewood. Should the wax be cut off of the grain side and left to adjust to the humidity for a period of time? I don't have much experience with exotics and I don't want something checking on me after I turn it.

So a little wood care 101 would be very appreciated.

I've used a good bit that came waxed and haven't removed it, and I've had no problems. But I guess it's all about what's under the wax. If you're uneasy about it, you could check it with a moisture meter.

I had a little varied mileage with waxed blocks when I started. I bought a beautiful pieces of dark cocobolo and some amboyna that shriveled up when cut into blanks. Ater that I scraped off a bunch of the wax on the sides and left the ends covered and checked repeatedly with the new moisture meter until they were dry. A few pieces are still drying 8 months later. They must have been pond dried prior to waxing.
