My best customer of the season asked me if I could make something for her nephew who's a bassoonist. "Sure" I said. Why not?
This is the result. Made it out of bloodwood, which I think was a good choice. Used a 7mm transmission. The bands are thick-wall 3/8" AL tubing. The blowie thingie and the three buttons are from solid 1/8" AL rod.
I used a satin pen tip, which in retrospect was a mistake. It actually matched the brushed AL tube pretty well, at least until I polished the AL bands. I should have used a chrome tip, or better yet, I shouldn't have used a tip at all, just machined the bottom band with a hole for the cross refill tip.
Over all, I was fairly pleased. I think she'll like it.
