I've tried some pen blanks that were from a mixed bag of blanks, and the bamboo type were very stringy, and unsuccessful in turning. I guess it could of been speed, sharp tool or something, but the blanks fell apart. On a trip last summer i found a imported chinese cutting board. After looking and lookiing, bammo I saw pens. I cut it up, the glue was solid, and it all turned easilly, kinda medium between a soft, ie cedar/pine and a hardwood. I liked it. So i guess my suggestion not to be afraid to look at and try woods from various sources. If its wood, give it a shot...now i am looking for some metals...I don't sell, I go for the "lets try this one"..
