Applying Decals to Acrylic Blanks?

Decals can be applied to just about any kind of smooth surface, and when applied to wood over a CA buildup, they can be sealed with additional CA buildup. But can you apply the same process to acrylic blanks? Some turners swear by it, but I've always thought that CA and acrylic don't necessarily enjoy a long life together. Is there a better way?

I was under the impression that CA and acrylic were essentially the same stuff. Somebody double-check me, but doesn't CA become acrylic when it dries?
