Look up Michael & Cynthia Gibson. He turns, she burns -amazing results!

You don't just pick up a woodburner and create something like Cynthia Gibson does. But there are a lot of things that can be done with a woodburner to add accents to a woodturning that don't require anywhere near that level of skill.

The texturing you see in the pieces was done by wood burning, not carving. You can find plans for his DIY wood vaporizer (aka burner) and hand pieces (with custom tips made from nichrome wire) by searching the web. He's done a lot of demos around the world and various woodturning clubs / turners have documents and published "how to" materials.
I would post pictures of my attempt at embellishing my woodturnings with burning about 8 years ago, but the results were a bit lame and I don't know if I kept any pictures.
