Antler without tubes?

Has anyone used antler without putting in tubes? I've beenasked to make some pens that aren't normal sized and was wondering if the antler would stand being used that way. Thanks, Randy

Randy, I believe the marrow section of the antler would be far too soft to hold any hardware, even with the aid of glue of some sort.

haven't done that, I'm not sure the antler would hold any press fit parts.
But you can always cut the tubes. You only use about a quarter inch on
each end.

Thanks for the replies. I sure didn't want to make 6 sets of splinters for him. I wasn't smart enough to think of cutting the tubes. I guess I could also get some of the 10 inchers and be safe. Thanks
