Another "what wood" Post

Hi all,
Got the blank photographed below as part of a trade, and would like to ID it. I've got some Royal Poinciana that looks very similar, but would appreciate any input. It's already become a pen--my wife took it before I could shoot any pictures of the finished piece!!

Earl, it looks like Royal Poinciana wood.......I have a good bit of it.

Probably not applicable in your case, but I came across this interesting link for wood identification: https://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/research/centers/woodanatomy/wood_idfactsheet.php

It looks like each household can have up to 5 woods identified each year. I haven't tried it, but I have a fairly large chunk of wood that I was told is Tasmanian Blackwood, I might send them a piece and see what they say.

I'd place my wager on mango because I have a lot of that but it is spalted and stabilized so I could be wrong.

Wood128 has a lot more experience with wood than I do so he could be right.

Thanks all. I got that particular blank in a trade, only one like it in the box. My wife took a few photos at work today (it was a gift for a co-worker of hers), those are attached. Nothing like Joe's cigar!!

I have some of Joe's (wood128) Royal Poinciana blanks (and red box elder, and teak, and...) and comparing before starting to work it is what led me down that path. Very similar to the monkey pod I see on the wood data base, i'd have never considered that before mentioned here.

I'm leaning to Royal Poinciana, based on the side-by-side and pics. And since the trade was with another member here--wouldn't be the least surprised.
