New guy outside Atlanta, GA. I just picked up a lightly used Jet 1220 and all the necessaries that go with it. My intent is to use it for turning custom fishing rod grips and seats but as I am studying the craft I see these marvelous pens and I am sure there will be numerous in my future. I look forward to learning from you guys and gals.

1st question - I need to install a work station for the lathe. What is the preferred working height you use?

Whatever makes you comfortable......And welcome to the forum! You have a-lot of reading ahead of you......Use the library to your advantage. Tons of info there.

Welcome to the forum. My advice is if you want to make fishing rod grips and seats then stay away from pens because you will get addicted and never make anything else. :)

I've still got plans for a wooden clock and a marble machine for my son lying around that I never started because I got hooked on the pens.

Welcome to the group.Try to make it tothe Chapter Meeting next month. It is December 17th at the Woodcraft store in Alpharetta.

Hi Kurt,

General rule of thumb: As you stand in front of the lathe, you'll roughly want the center axis of the lathe at your elbow height.

Hope to see you in December!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I will try to make the Dec meet. I have stopped at the WC store in Alpharetta so I know where it is.

Gilrock - Thanks for the warning. I am prone to these types of addictions so I'll just go with the flow and see where it takes me.

Steve - That makes a lot of sense. I'll start there.

Welcome to the forum from North GA. There are alot of great turners out there so you should learn quick. Pen turning is very addictive.

Welcome, Kurt, from the muddy banks of Lake Oconee, 75 miles to your east! You find great information about all types of wood turning here.

Man... you Georgia boys come crawling out of the woodwork (pun intended). Again, thanks for the warm welcome.

We all are not from GA but pretty close. I hope to make the meeting myself. It is about 3 hour drive for me to get there. and welcome

Phil

I guess we have room for another pen turner in this neck of the woods. Welcome aboard.

There are also several turning groups in the Atlanta area. Depending on what part of the metro area you live, you may have one or more that meet near you.
