At this rate, we will soon have a congregation full of pen turners. Another member of our church came over this afternoon to turn a couple of pens. Here's his first two...

The wood is some of the deepest dark red mesquite I've ever seen. He got a chunk of root from a friend of his in Bracketville, TX and gave it to me a couple of months ago. I sliced it up into pen blanks & spindles and we finally were able to get together for a turning session today.

The bottom one had a couple of small voids, so I even got to teach him how to fill voids.

Good looking pens Ed it is nice to hear you are sharing your love of pen making by teaching others, I also find it rewarding to do the same.
As far as the character of the root I find that some of the best pens can be found in wood from the root of the tree. I have made some Walnut and Black Locust pens that a lot of figuring made from root stock.
