Another Dyeing Question

Some time ago I purchased some dyed maple blanks from Rockler and turned out some very interesting pens. The blanks were dyed throughout. Does anyone here know how a hbbyist could acocmplish the same thing? I know I could dye the blank after turning, but was impressed with the variations I saw in the Rockler blanks. Don't be afriad to use the search function. I'd wager that there are 100 active and archived threads on the subject of dyeing wood. There was a fairly recent thread by Pete (wood-of-ikind). He was able to create some nice colors and get the dye to penetrate fairly deeply.
