I was doing a farmer's market earlier this summer and another vendor (he was selling produce and meats) came over and said his son ran a sawmill and he had some burl if I was interested... I drove up to their place... about hour and half away from my house... picked up about a dozen pieces of oak burl of various sizes... these three pepper mills are from three of the pieces... the mills are 12, 9 and 7 1/2 inches tall... all are bout 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 inches diameter. They are the crush/grind mechanisms from CSUSA and/or Packardwoods... finish is 4 or 5 coats of wipe on poly.

These were done a little earlier... glue ups from a single board..
the boards were cut into about 1 3/4 inch wide strips, then glued around a center piece that was cut square to form the core of the mill. on the second one I was a little narrow on my strips and had to add some accent veneer strips. The first is a wood my supplier called sucupira that had some sap wood and a little spalting in the sap.... the second is pau santo with brazilian ebony and purple heart accents. the third is Bubinga.

Chuck, I agree with you about oak burl. I luck on to 2 large chunks of oak burl recently. It took some doing, but I was able to cut them down. After culling out bad pieces, I turned this one just to see what it would finish out to. I can't believe that oak can look this good. This particular piece actually appears to have a starburst design in it.
