Hi Folks: This year while I will solicit demos through PM's , all discussion, questions, drafts of the schedule will be done in this thread.

I began to contact folks for demos:

From Last Year (Arkie - Jim Swank; and PTownSubbie will be the Southwest Meeting).

mg-dreyer (Mark Dreyer) - Responded; has applied for a juried show he has done previously. Doubtful, but possible.
Glenn McCullough
ed4copies (Ed Brown) - Responded - yes, will do a demo
JohnU (John Underhill) - iffy, will have new job responsibilities. Will keep us informed.
Bellsy (Dave Bell)
Bad Frog (Jim Pratt) - Responded - yes will do a demo
Magicbob - Responded - yes will do a demo
Bob Jackson

New contacts (messages/e-mails sent):

John Macdougall - Had volunteered last year, but needed to decline (Thread Wrapping)
Brian Gray - Edison Pen Company (I suggested Fountain Pen Maintenance; discussion of his company, etc)
Doug Thompson - Thompson Lathe Tools

I'll start to draft a 2 day; and 3 day schedule for us to consider.

Any suggestions is appreciated.

Mark

Jonathon Brooks may be another one who might do a casting demo.

He's also on the schedule at Augusta (a few minutes from his house in Aiken, GA). But, we have options for other casters. Maybe not famous, but can walk folks through the basics.

maybe Beall can do something.
Maybe we can get someone from Buckeye to do a small bowl demo.

Yup and Yup! I tried Beall last year - no response, but excellent suggestion. And I am counting on 1-2 demos for other nice turnings from Buckeye - hopefully our chapter members, but others are welcome.

I'll follow up!

I love reminders!

Doug Thompson just replied - "No"; he has not ever recouped his travel costs to attend a penturning meeting. And yes, he knows this is local.

3 Day Schedule Draft

For this first Draft, some overall concepts:

1. I shortened Saturday by one session - Earlier dinner time, less fatigue all all attending.

2. Added Sunday 2/3 day - can be shortened/modified.

3. Set up a rotation for 2 lathes and tables in the second room. I identified some topics than can be rotated over the 2 days, so folks who want to do each, have a second offering.

4. I have gotten very poor response for requests to do demos. Not an issue with the second conference, just some scheduling issues and lack of interest. Yes, I can do a wider outreach.

5. I need to know if we are committed to the three day schedule so my requests can reflect that slots are ava on Fri/Sat/Sun.

6. I can easily scale back to our previous 2 day format - I'm a team player, so I will work my butt off to support wherever the decision goes.

7. ALL Topics I entered are simply suggestions - substitute at will.

I layed this out nice and purty in Excel, but this format is less friendly... And time consuming to enter.

Any and all comments and suggestions are begged for!!

For this first Draft, some overall concepts:

1. I shortened Saturday by one session - Earlier dinner time, less fatigue all all attending. Good idea, but I don't have a strong opinion about it either way

2. Added Sunday 2/3 day - can be shortened/modified. Yes. People do have to work on Monday ending earlier on Sunday is a good idea

3. Set up a rotation for 2 lathes and tables in the second room. I identified some topics than can be rotated over the 2 days, so folks who want to do each, have a second offering. Good idea

4. I have gotten very poor response for requests to do demos. Not an issue with the second conference, just some scheduling issues and lack of interest. Yes, I can do a wider outreach. Part of the problem here is the Southeast Gathering being held on the same dates. Vendors like to speak and many of our vendors committed to the other gathering. I wouldn't panic yet, we still have time,

5. I need to know if we are committed to the three day schedule so my requests can reflect that slots are ava on Fri/Sat/Sun. My vote is for a 3 day format.

6. I can easily scale back to our previous 2 day format - I'm a team player, so I will work my butt off to support wherever the decision goes. No

7. ALL Topics I entered are simply suggestions - substitute at will.

I layed this out nice and purty in Excel, but this format is less friendly... And time consuming to enter.

Any and all comments and suggestions are begged for!! I apologize for not responding sooner. It gets rather aggravating to post a request for input and get nothing. We need to hear from everyone.

Above are my initial thoughts.

Other possible topics: (strictly a brainstorming exercise on my part)

Drilling on the lathe vs drilling on a drill press.
How to drill without having a blow-out.
Comparison of similar pen kits offered by different manufacturers
Copyright issues
Etsy vs stand alone website vs craft shows vs consignment shops
How to price your work
Pen Wizard
Identify the bare minimum needed (tools and materials) to turn your first pen
Sandpaper comparison (could be included in finishing alternatives)
Benefits of being a member of the IAP
Stating a local IAP Chapter
Planning and presenting a Penturners Gathering
Penturner's resources.
Choosing tools
Buffing
wet sanding vs dry sanding
comparison of inks
Turning for troops

I'll probably think of some more later and will post them. I encourage each of us to post as many ideas as possible, even if they might be a little off the wall or, dare I say, dumb. Some of those dumb ideas may lead to some very unique demos. Don't be shy!

How about a "First Time Turner" opportunity for anyone in attendance (spouses or children) who have never turned anything. Help them turn a pen. (Mentoring session)

Beginning an expanded Demo Search

Happy New Years Folks.

Briefly, there are 12 demo slots for the three day format in the main room, and at a minimum 4 hands-on topics for the second room.

As of today, I have tentative confirmation for 8 main room demos, and 2 for Hands-On.

I will contact several members of the Buckeye Woodturners Club to see if they can assist us for any open slots.

I will also contact those IAP members who indicated they would do a demo, to get their topics and preference for which day.

NOTE: My job would be much easier if our registration was started, as I could explore the skill set of the attendees and solicit help from them.

Also, do we know of any additional vendors attending other than the three on the website? I would like to contact any of them for assistance.

As soon as I get the topics and days preferences from the current volunteers, I will post a tentative schedule - hopefully in about a week.

On a final issue - While I will put every effort into this year's MPG as I have done in the past, this will be my last year as a committee member (or at least for 2019). I have several personal issues that may become very time-consuming, and I want to give the committee as much time as possible to plan for a transition after the 2018 MPG.

Mike - My fuzzy memory just reminded me that John Macdougall indicated he could do thread wrapping. But I cannot find any communication about it either on my IAP stuff or e-mail records. Did I imagine it?

Mark,
I don't think you are imagining it. I too recall that. I'll look around to see if I can find it.

I agree that we should start registration ASAP. I have no other vendors committed other than what is listed on the Website. Fred Wissen is a "Maybe"

Mike & Mark

Going through some old posts I found one where Richard Ray (hcpens) said he was planning on coming and possibly as a vendor.
I don't know if ether of you saw this and have reached out to him.
Could be another vendor and vendors like to talk.

Mark,
I do appreciate all you have done and continue to do for this group, but if you remember in the van we agreed it was a lifetime commitment.
(tongue firmly planted in cheek)
You will be missed and quite honestly, probably consulted by whom ever takes your seat.

Rough Draft So Far

These are just the basic volunteers and topics. RED is confirmed. Black is my suggestions that I am following up on and just need to get confirmation.

Full Lecture Demos: The order can still be shifted.

1. Ed Brown (we are discussing 2-3 options)
2. Jim Pratt - TBD
3. Robert Marquis - Lasers and Rotary Engraving Jig
4. Chris Cannon - Tips and Tricks after the first 100 pens
5. Dale Allen - Faux Cigar Pen
6. Ernie Borraga - Shaving Brushes and Handles
7. Ronald Tomasch - TBD (Buckeye Woodturners Club) - Non-pen turning Topic
8. Michelle Ferrara - Watch Parts Pens (I have emailed her)
9. Buckeye Woodturners - Non pen turning topic
10. Open slot (possibly a second demo from Ed Brown).

11. Depends on the sunday time limits
12. Depends on the Sunday time limits

Hand's-On Small Group Demos

Lathe/Table I

1. Tool Time With Ed Brown - Basic Lathe Tools
2. Supervised Lathe Time For Beginners (Pens) - Ohio IAP Chapter/Buckeye Chapter
3. Casting Watch Parts - Ernie Borraga
4. Magic Skew/Carbide Tools - Robert Macquis
5. Supervised Lathe Time For Beginners - (Non Pen; i.e. Candlesticks) - Ohio IAP Chapter/Buckeye Chapter
6. Collet Chuck/Pin Chuck - Use and projects - Ohio IAP Chapter/Buckeye Chapter
7. Supervised Lathe Time For Beginners - (Non Pen; i.e. Bowls) - Ohio IAP Chapter/Buckeye Chapter

Lathe/Table II

1. Segmenting I: Basic Brick/Castle Designs - Mark James
2. Segmenting II: TrimRings and End Caps - Mark James
3. Segmenting III: Chevron Blanks and Finials - Mark James
4. Casting Basics: Resins, Labels, Foil, Carbon Fiber, etc - (Ernie, Tom Bell, Jim Pratt, others?)

Depending on demand, and the availability of a second lathe and "adult supervision volunteers," the beginners sessions could be expanded.

Also, I may limit my segmenting sessions to 4-5 people per session, and repeat the session a second time to accomodate demand. There are enough tables for 2-3 hands-on at the same time.

Mike, I feel confident you can add the RED to the website line-ups.

Looks great,
I just got off the phone, we have the room on Sunday until 1PM then tear-down

Okie Dokie - I'll fill the schedule!

Michelle got back that she has asked for the days off - she would come as a vendor and do a Watch Parts demo on Saturday.

The demos are filling in nicely.

I've brought the Speakers Page on the website up to date. I wrote out the schedule for the two rooms but didn't plug any particular speakers / demos into any slots yet. I wasn't sure if what you had above was accurate.

Please let me know and also take a look at the two pages. Let me know if anything is wrong.

Thanks

Hi Mike.

Tomorrow AM I'll get you a more specific schedule to work with. Yes, a few changes from what you posted, but you're pretty much there. And it will probably get tweaked as we get closer, but the demos are starting to fill in nicely.

And, some of my ideas for the Hand-On room may not work - but I'm shooting for the stars with two demos at the same time. If I fall short, there will be enough options still available.

I'm waiting on a few contacts to get back to me, but it has been a good week for planning.

SUNDAY

We can put up a sign-up sheet for requests and see if we can accommodate? Just a random thought.

I'll be leaning on local turners (IAP Ohio/Buckeye) to assist in the "Adult Supervision" lathe sessions; but when I get a tentative list of attendees, I can make requests for experienced turners that may be willing to get dirty. Maybe 5-10 turners supervising a single lathe for just one session - I think this mentoring was a great idea Mike!

who takes care of the facebook page ? I see there was a event made, was going to ask if one could be made. I was asked if the schedule could be posted on the event page so people don't have to go to the website. I don't see a problem the way it is but I told them I would ask.

I don't know it that is possible. I'll play with it this weekend.

John Macdougall confirmed he will do a "Thread Wrapping" demo. We are working out which day, as he has a long drive.

I have been contacted by Toni Ransfield about her possible attendance and wanting to do a demo if she attends (she and Ed Street were listed last week on the Augusta Schedule; now they are not listed - Hmnnn...)

And waiting on confirmation from Michelle Ferrara.

Interesting times.

I'll put John on the website on the Speakers / Demos page. Just let me know where you decide you want him on the schedule. I have Michelle down as a vendor.
As far as Toni and Ed are concerned, I'll believe it when I see it.

who takes care of the facebook page ? I see there was a event made, was going to ask if one could be made. I was asked if the schedule could be posted on the event page so people don't have to go to the website. I don't see a problem the way it is but I told them I would ask.

I figured it out. (I am not as Facebook savoy as some people think.) The schedule is now on the event page.

I thought Barry Gross was coming?

Arizona Silhouette is listed as an exhibitor at the Woodworking show in Columbus Jan 19 - 21. I will be attending on one of those days and will track Barry down.

If any of you are attending this show let me know what day you are going.

Going through some old posts I found one where Richard Ray (hcpens) said he was planning on coming and possibly as a vendor.
I don't know if ether of you saw this and have reached out to him.
Could be another vendor and vendors like to talk.

WF

I sent Richard a PM with links to register.

Dave Bell (Bellsy) just confirmed he will attend and do a demo.

I have messages out to several folks to see if the HAVE to do their demo on a specific day. After I get their answers I'll update the draft schedule.

The Main room schedule is essentially full.

Three slots are in play with four current possibles: Michelle Ferrara; Toni Ransfield; Vendor Talks and Marketing. We should also hold at least one-two topics in reserve for any last minute drop-outs. The easiest would be the Vendor Talks as there is no real preparation, and the marketing panel discussion. These can easily be added if a full demo drops out close to the date.
