Welcome Urban. To get started you will need a mandrel with at the least 7mm spacers which go in between the two pieces of wood that you are turning. All this can be purchase from many outlets here in the US. Penn State Industries has a very good website and offer a DVD that will take you from the ground up. You may also purchase various pen kits that will get you going. I would suggest that you start with the slimline pen. It is the easiest and you will see how to go from there. Again, PSI will get you going. Good luck

I'll bet you never thought you would hear from someone in the US who has actually been to Umeu.

I was told it is the northern most airport to the Arctic circle.

About 30 years ago I delivered a Cessna 182RG to that city.

Welcome Urban, Do not be at all shy about asking questions. Everyone here is very friendly and ready to help.
I would start with the link above to get an idea of what is needed to get started.
I will do my best to answer your questions.

This with penturning is unknown in this country and you cant get any help to start with it so i must try get some help overseas in USA.
You found the right place for help. We also have members in other European countries. I am not sure we have any other members in Sweden. Let us know what trouble you have in getting things.
I need help to get the first tackle equipment for this hobby. I have a turner, some steel and different woods. What more do i need to get started?
The link from the post above should give you a complete idea of what all you will need. actually getting it may be the hardest work.
here is a list of places that sell supplies and equipment. http://www.penturners.org/links/browselinks.php?c=3
Once you start getting an idea of what you want. ask about it here. The members know almost all of the equipment, what is good what is bad etc so they will be able to help you make the right decisions.
You can start with slimline or Cigar pens. both are good pens to start with.

Urban,
Welcome form the souteast of the mitten(Michigan). You dont have to purchase the PSI cd, if you pm me your address, I will send it to you free. You have such a great opportunity to be the only penmaker in your area, you should clean up.

Welcome to the madness of pen turning! Lots of fun! Here are some things to help you get started.

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46654

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Hej, Urban! :)

My grandmother was born in Askrod, near Malmo, and I still have family in Goteborg!

To turn pens, you need a lathe and tools, and other than that, you need a way to make a hole in the centre of the wooden blanks...to assemble, you can use a clamp until you get started...

Try digging around in the Library (at the top of the page) - there's a lot of the information you need in there.

Thanks for welcome one and all.

Now i have to wake my bad english i learn in school for 45 years ago to read all links you sent me and that is not easy.

lesstoresund: I belive that was Luleå you delivered the Cessna to. Umeå and Luleå is quite alike but Luleå is just at the artic circle, Umeå is 300 km. south off Luleå.

Now i have to learn where, in what forum that i can preserve my questions so they come in the right place. This is hard work for an old janitor

Thanks again for all the answers, very frendly.

Urban, welcome to the vortex... don't worry about the English... we have a few here whose native tongue is English and we don't do any better than you...

I'll have to look again to see where it is, but during my working career I did international shipping and I think I remember shipping some firearms to a gun shop in Umea... I remember it because it was a pretty complicated shipment, special export license from USA and special import license from Sweden... it's been nearly 20 years since, so I've forgotten my geography, but the name is very familiar....

If you have a lathe and tools, you have the beginnings... as for kits, go on line to look at the catalogs for pen kits... many don't ship internationally, but some of them do.

Some of the catalog links here:

http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/
http://www.pennstateind.com/
http://www.woodcraft.com/catalog/catalog.aspx?refcode=09INPROM
http://www.hutproducts.com/
http://www.packardwoodworks.com/

Some re-sellers that sell from some of these catalogs

http://www.woodpenpro.com/pen_kits/index.html
http://www.arizonasilhouette.com/
http://www.beartoothwoods.com/catalog/
http://www.augumspenworks.com/crushed.htm
http://www.woodturningz.com/Pen_Kits.aspx

There will be others that you will pick up as you go along... those that don't ship overseas mostly note the fact in their pages somewhere...
You might watch here for the group buys and see if you can join any of them or maybe some of the members here can help with shipping overseas... we are a very helpful group and a great family atmosphere...

Hi and thanks for all the welcome once again. Now I am using Google's translation and hope it will be a bit better English. Thanks for the tip "markgum. Leaycraft: Luleå is about. 30 Swedish mil north of Umeå and I've been there many times, very nice city, I think. As I tried to tell me so, I have managed to find a guy who has been doing penturning in a couple of years. He has promised to help me to get the things needed to get started but when I get them I do not know. He is given his own stuff from England where he had good contacts with some dealers. When / if I manage to turner and a pen, I promise to try and post a picture of it.

Best wishes, Urban

I forgot to ask which forum I should use for different things. thinking of technical issues, home and family, pictures of any pens, pictures of others who do not have to do with pens. I guess I should not be in this particular forom all the time but every thing has its own special place.

Best wishes, Urban

Welcome from upstate NY. Don't worry about getting your questions in the wrong forum. It's more important to ask the question than to worry about where it goes. Glenn listed the 3 you will use the most.

Hello everyone, and especially Glenn McCullough.

Today I received mail from America. I have just watched a DWD as Glenn has sent me. I now understand much better how turning a pencil, very good and educational movie. How to reciprocate Glenn I do not know but he should get a star in the sky from me. Now I am just waiting on the stuff that I ordered so I can get started with the lathe.
Thanks again for your help and I promise to show a picture of my first pen.

Best wishes, Urban

Welcome Urban.....consider this a journey, sometimes it is like going up hill and other times like down hill. Read the articles in the "library" and use the "search tool" when you find something you need to know. "You tube" has some great mini videos too. This site contains a wealth of knowledge unequalled anywhere for turners. Sit down when you have time and start to read the articles and threads here. You have come to the right place.

Urban,

I'm glad you are here. As all the others have said, everyone is very helpful so if you need anything, please ask.

You might gather from my last name that I have some Swedish blood flowing through my veins. Unfortunately that part of the family tree split off long ago.
