No fancy photo shoot here. A snakewood Sierra EB. It was a long process from cooling the drill bit while drilling as slow as possible to putting the finish on as to not get the wood even remotely hot.It took 2 hours from start to finish, so I hope...........I'm not gonna even say it

I like snakewood and and the EB and your putting them together made a really nice pen. Congratulations. I may be the only one who thinks this but I'm not convinced that heat is the problem with snakewood. I'm not out to start an argument....just not convinced about the heat and snakewood theory. Once again, you made a fine looking pen. And two hours is not really a long time. Some of my snakewood pens have taken as long as 4 months and 3 months 3 weeks and 6 days of that time was just waiting.:biggrin:

Don, you may be 100% on the heat/cracking issue. It may have nothing to do with it....but since it was my 1st pen from snakewood I was taking NO chances and took my time with the whole process ;) . Still looking good today, on day #3!

No alternative theory...and I seem to be in the minority so I'm probably way off base with my opinion. Snakewood is one of those woods that cracks. I am no expert on wood so my opinion is just that...an opinion. I drill, sand, turn and basically work snakewood as I do any other wood. I leave the blanks unfinished sitting in the shop waiting...for them to crack. I want it to crack so I can repair the crack and make the pen. I've not had a pen returned that I've let crack and repaired it. Sometines that takes quite awhile and sometimes it happens quickly. I do wish I had the answer...or a better answer. Snakewood is not worth the worry. It is a beautiful wood and makes exquisite pens but why put ourselves through anguish. Turn the blanks, let them crack and fix the cracks. A cracked and repaired snakewood pen is nicer than most any other wooden pen. Also, I have no ambition to be able to say I make snakewood pens that have never cracked. Here is a link to some interesting reading on handling and working with snakewood. I hope it helps and I hope to see more beautiful (cracked or not cracked) snakewood pens.

Don: Do you have an alternative theory as to why snakewood cracks or is it that you are just not convinced of the heat theory??

According to a snakewood pro/friend. It is heat that causes it to c****. Keeping it cool is you best defense against the problem.

Then heat it is...can't argue with a pro! I have no problem with being wrong about an opinion. Still love snakewood...after it is cracked and repaired.
