Well been at it again. I had to make a few more to hand out this weekend for some more ministers. I made these in between services yesterday so that they could have them last night. The first one on the left in the group pic you can probably see where the glue kinda rises up before the tip. I just cant seem to eliminate that where the bushings go. not sure the name of wood, Now the second one I would like to see if you master pen turners can identify this wood I dont think I seen one made out of it as of yet. the third one is made of apple wood. Please tell me what yall think.

thanks

If they're all American woods I'd say you have (left to right) Walnut, Oak, then your already identified apple.

It also looks like might have turned down just a little too far on the tip ends of the two outside pens which might be why you're seeing some glue. Normally the end of the wood barrel should just butt up flat against the tip when you press it in place. The finish looks good on all of them.

Here's a Black Walnut Cigar and White Oak Olympian you can use as comparison.

Looking at your pen on the left once more, due to the yellowish collor in the photos it might be lighter than I first thought and possibly be Mahogany. The only example I had handy on that wood is this one:

Hopefully that helps!

It does indeed look over-turned or over-sanded. Been there, you just gotta refine your touch. Another nice group. Keep going, you're actually suffering quite minor issues for being so early into turning.

+1 on what doc said. It is better to have the pen barrel just slightly proud of the pen hardware rather then the other way around. You can always sand/trim/turn off a little more to match it up to the hardware but it is hard to add wood back. Also make sure that you keep your bushings clean. I soak mine in acetone after each use and then wax them before each use. I can picture a buildup of glue/finish on the bushing causing you to create that "ski slope" look trying to compensate for the buildup. Hope this helps, you got some good looking pens there they just need some minor refinements or as Doc said a more "refined" touch.

I will admitted that I purposely under turn it because I was trying to eliminate the finish being bigger than the tip and the center band. I got the middle finish down its just the ends I am having problems with.
