Collaborative Creative Challenge

This is a new activity! It involves collaborative planning and creation of a pen. Participants in this activity may find themselves in a position to mentor other members, learn from more experienced members, establish friendships and contribute to a positive sense of community here in the IAP. This activity will cause you to think, communicate and in many cases step out of your comfort zone to create a true work of art.

PLEASE READ ALL OF THESE RULES VERY CAREFULLY.

This challenge is open to all members of the IAP regardless of skill level who:

1. Have their full name, place of residence (city & state or equivalent) in their public profile. Please note that information contained in the IAP Public Profile is not visible to non-members of the IAP.

2. Are able to be reached via PM or email.

3. Have not been banned from participation in IAP Activities due to failure to complete a previous activity.

4. Are willing to ship internationally.

Registrants will be randomly grouped into teams of approximately 5 individuals. Some groups may have 4 members or 6 members depending upon the number of entrants. The groupings will be done by random draw conducted by the Activities Manger. All registrants will be assigned to a team on or before July 15, 2012.
Once the teams are created each team will be assigned a number (Team 1, Team 2, etc.) Each entrant will be advised who their teammates are and the team number to which they are assigned. Team members are to keep the identity of their teammates, and their team number, to themselves. In other words, no one outside of your own team and the Activities Manager should know what team you are on and who your teammates are.

Once the teams are selected by said drawing there will be no changes to the teams. The IAP recognizes that sometimes things happen that restricts one's ability to complete this or any IAP activity. If you foresee any reason that you would be unable to complete this activity please, DO NOT SIGN UP. If, during this course of this activity you find you are unable to complete the activity you MUST communicate this fact to your team members and the Activities Manager. INDIVIDUALS WHO, WITHOUT GOOD REASON OR WITHOUT COMMUNICATION TO THE ACTIVITIES MANAGER AND THEIR TEAM MEMBERS, FAIL TO HONOR THEIR OBLIGATION TO COMPLETE THIS ACTIVITIY WILL BE BANNED FROM PARTICIPATION IN FUTURE IAP ACTIVITIES.

Each team will create a pen. Each member of a team must contribute (hands – on) to the creation of the team's pen. There are no restrictions or requirements involved in the creation of the pen. This is strictly "Freestyle".
Each team will have four months to complete their pen. During this period team members will have to communicate with other team members and ship the pen between them to facilitate consruction. All expenses related to the construction of the pen, including all shipping costs are the responsibility of the team members.

Teams are encouraged to send the Activities Manager teaser photos, progress reports or other information relevant to the creation of the pen. The Activities Manager will post photos and updates in such a way as to keep the membership informed about the progress of the activity without revealing the identity of teams or team members.

Completed pens will be shipped via Priority Mail, at the team member's expense, to the Activities Manager. The outside of the package should be marked "CCC" to clearly indicate that the package contains a pen that is part of the Collaborative Creative Challenge. The package must be received by the Activities Manager by November 15, 2012. The IAP is not responsible for delays in delivery caused by the USPS. All of the packages will be opened by the Activities Manager at the same time. In addition to the pen, each team's package will include a brief description of the pen, how the design was agreed upon, and what part each member played in the creation of the pen. The Activities Manager will ship all the pens to a judge.

The pens will be judged independently by a panel of 4 judges. Once a judge is finished the judge will email his/her scores and comments to the Activities Manager. The Activities Manager will then provide that judge with the address of the second judge, to whom the pens will be shipped. This process will repeat itself until all judges have scored the pens. The pens will then be returned to the Activities Manager. The submitted pens will become the property of the IAP. Final disposition of the pens is, at this time, undetermined. What can be guaranteed at this point is that the pens will be used for IAP site support, some charitable purpose, returned to a member of the team responsible for creating the pen, or used in some other manner for the betterment of the IAP as a community. No IAP Manager will retain the pens for personal use.

The Judges will not know the identity of the team members, nor will they know which pen was submitted by which team. Each judge will know the identity of just one other judge. They will only know the identity of the judge to whom they must ship the pens. The pens will be judged on the following criteria.

FORM:
• The pen is visually appealing
• The pen is not overly wide or tapered
• The pen is comfortable to hold and write with.

FIT:
• There is smooth, seamless transition between fitted components.

FINISH:
• The finish is consistent and even.
• There are no sanding marks or swirls in the finish.
• No discoloration or spotting evident under magnified examination.

ORIGINALITY:
• Uniqueness of design
• Uniqueness of modifications

FUNCTIONALITY:
• The pen must be a functional writing instrument.
• Smoothness of actions/mechanisms

Each judge will send their scoring sheets, with comments and critiques, to the Activities Manager. The pen with the highest overall score will be the winner. In the event of tying high scores the high scoring pens will be recognized as "Winners" of this challenge.

At the conclusion of the challenge photos of the completed pens will be posted along with the names of the teams responsible for each pen. The winning pen(s), and the identities of the artists responsible for their creation will be featured on the IAPs Front Page during the month of December. The pen(s) featured on the IAP's front page by virtue of winning this challenge will not be included in the Annual Birthday Bash's "Featured pen" contest. Photos of all pens entered in this challenge will be posted in a Collaborative Creative Challenge Photo Album.

This is a new IAP Activity and as such it may be necessary to modify and/or amend these rules due to unforeseen circumstances that may arise during the course of the activity. Modifications will be clearly communicated to the entrants. Suggestions for improvement of this activity are encouraged via PM to the Activities Manager (not posted in the thread).

Signups are done by posting in this thread and they begin NOW!!! Signups will be closed at 10:00pm (est) on July 11, 2012 once we reach 50 people.

We have 13 people registered so far. Off to a pretty good start. Those of you who have already registered...encourage your friends to participate. It would be great to have 50 people!!!

I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how 5 people are going to work on one pen. Can some one help with like an example?

Each team member needs to contribute, hands-on, to the creation of the pen. Each team will have to decide among themselves who will do what. For example, team member A might be reletively new, but can confidently cut and round a blank. Team member A will then ship to Team member B, who will drill the blank and glue in tubes. Meanwnile, team member C, who has a metal lathe, is busy making a custom center band, nose, clip and finial. Team member D happens to do a fantastic finish, so that will be his contribution. Etc, etc, etc. It is a matter of utilizing all tema member's strengths and imagination to make one outstanding pen!

I'm curious how this will work too.
I'm thinking a couple guys could do blank making - maybe pouring or segmenting - both maybe -- and a couple other guys could do turning - another finishing? And everybody involved int he design.

My hesitation is seeing how 5 people will be able to work on a pen AND feel like they're part of the final product.

AK

Well, just knowing that you took part in the process of making the pen should make you feel like you're part of the final product. Why do you think that you wouldn't feel like you were a part of it?

24 participants so far! :biggrin::biggrin:

Now, if each person who signed up already could convince just one more person to sign up we should end up with approximately 10 outstanding, inspiring, beautiful beyond words pens.

There is plenty of time left to sign up, but why wait??
