How many RPMs do you run when you drill wood blanks? How about acrylic?

I got a drill press today and set it on 1600 RPMs. I'm thinking this is too fast from the squeal and temp of the wood shavings.

Thanks in advance.

don't agree:biggrin:

One thing you have to remember it is a pen blank you are drilling and drill into end grain so to me those charts are useless for what we do. My opinion only.

I drill pen blanks on the lathe, at less than 500. If you want to take a chance on cracking a blank or having a wood blank warp on you, then drill faster.
