Hi All,

Thought I'd let you all see what the tree Gods left for me today.

I work out of Madison, WI and they are building a new highline (high tension power line) along the interstate north of town. My job is to go out and locate and mark our fiber optic line so when they drill their 8 foot diameter, 25 foot deep hole to fill with concrete for the tower bases, they don't cut it.

Before they can drill, however, another company comes in and clears the trees from the right of way the towers will be on. Well, I had a talk with the guys doing the tree cutting, and asked if they could leave me any burls they found, for which I would exchange them a pen, or maybe a couple...

Today, I got up by the Dells, (Wisconsin Dells for all you non Wisconsinites), and lo, and behold, this was sitting on the matting, waiting for me...

It is approximately 30" long and 20" in diameter. Wood unknown. It has a white color of wood for the outside ring and the core is red.

Hope I get some good blanks out it!

You are very modest mate, you seemed over the moon with that surprise from the wood God's and in fact, you should be but I keep thinking...! you would have a heart attack or think you were in Haven if you would see my stash, the wood Gods have been very generous to me over the years however it should be said, I "hunt" trees/woods like a fox hunts for rabbits, I'm always looking...!

Cut your pen blanks well oversized 1" square at least and put them to dry, you may have some ready to turn in 6 months...!

Good luck,

Cheers

You can speed dry a couple of blanks in a dehydrator just to see how they turn. Here in AZ I "kiln dry" mine in an old gas barbecue sitting out in the AZ sun.
