Here is a pen I sold this weekend at a local fair and the customer is wanting to know the wood species as she is giving it as a gift.
I received this blank in a swap a couple of years ago and don't even know who it came from. It appeared to have been treated or stabilized and had a strong odor. Not anything like Cactus Juice.
Right now, I told her it was officially Mystery Wood unless someone else can ID it.
Please reply if you feel you know for sure. On this blank, would the black be spalting? It just looks so much different than other spalted blanks I have.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm poor at guessing games but I have some hackberry that looks just like it. The wood makes me itch so bad, it just sits in the pile. It's pretty when finished but the itching is too much for me.

I appreciate the help. I searched online images for these suggestions and am going with the spalted hackberry. It seemed to be the closest match. I will pass along to the customer that this is our best educated guess.

Thanks again!
